A BLOODY VALENTINE'S DAY...

Today my country and more specifically my city woke up to tragedy.  It was breaking news….
Our Olympic and Paralympic hero Oscar Pistorius had allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

On a day set aside for love we as a people, as a nation and as supporters are in state of shock and sheer disbelief.
There is of course, as can be expected a lot of speculation as to what occurred at Oscar’s home during the early hours of this morning (around 4am).  Some of the rumors include domestic violence and a case of mistaken identity.  A valentine’s surprise gone wrong…..some (during the first reports) of the speculation revolves around Reeva arriving at Oscar’s home in the early hours of this morning to prepare a valentine surprise for him.  He hearing unknown sounds in his home suspected an intruder. He then shot the “intruder” in the arm and head…….and then instead of an intruder there was Reeva!! To some this might sound crazy but we live in a country where violence is the norm.  In fact SA has some of the world’s highest rates of violent crime and many carry weapons to defend themselves against intruders.
As you can imagine social networks have been going crazy and the media has been frantically chasing the story. This is not a day for speculation, this is not a day for the terrible terrible jokes which are already floating around Twitter and Facebook.
Today is a day of great sadness because regardless of whether speculations are confirmed as facts or allegations are proven true a young beautiful women’s life ended and a young man’s life has been changed forever.
I have never met either one of them although I have followed Oscar’s career for the past couple of years and have recently become aware of Reeva as a brand ambassador for the skincare products I use but I am shaken to my core and overwhelmed by the magnitude of it all.
It feels very surreal as I watch this tragedy play out.  I am sure that although the truth will be revealed as the investigation continues there will always be questions in the minds of both families as to what exactly happened on this bloody valentine’s day!
My thoughts and prayers go out to both families.

Just the other day..

Their first "public" appearance together..

Oscar leaving the scene this morning

This is so so so terrible. I've been thinking about it all day. How horrible this must be for her family and friends as well as his family and friends. And how traumatised he must be if it did indeed happen on accident. Will be interesting to see what comes out as the investigation continues... Like you said, either way it's a tragedy.
