MY MOM, A PROVERBS 31 WOMEN...A PHOTO LINK UP

Linking up with Katie today...

Watching my mom grieve for my dad these past eight months has been one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do. Her loss leaves you gasping for breath and the sadness around her is overwhelming. I lost the love of my life but my mom lost her everything.

We are starting to slowly work through the loss, the agony and daily we work prayerfully to find a new normal.  On Saturday we went out to breakfast and it was such a wonderful time because we laughed and we chatted and we shared.  Afterwards I persuaded mom to pose for some photos.  She does not do so readily as she had GBS five years ago and it has changed the one side of her face especially around the eye and lip areas.  But after some gentle prodding and coaxing she agreed.

This is my mom...

Proverbs 31:10-31
New International Version (NIV)

Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character

10 [a]A wife of noble character who can find?
    She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband has full confidence in her
    and lacks nothing of value.
12 She brings him good, not harm,
    all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
    and works with eager hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
    bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
    she provides food for her family
    and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
    out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
    her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
    and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
    and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
    and extends her hands to the needy.
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
    for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
    she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
    where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
    and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
    she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
    and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
    and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
    her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
    but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
    but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
    and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

PHOTO'S TO CHALLENGE MY SELF CONFIDENCE...

As I mentioned in Tuesday's post I was very hesitant to get on board with Katie's photo shoot idea but.....Katie is persuasive and I realised I can't live under bushel.

So I begged and pleaded with the brother to help me out.  Let's just say after some serious bribery and corruption he agreed.  We sat down and came up with a couple of ideas which involved a park, a bridge, a lake and some swans! I must admit I was kinda excited as I started scouring the internet  pintrest for specific ideas of shots.

It would probably be a good place to point out that I know that when I look at my pictures they will not look the same as the ones I was using as a template because they all had stick insect thin models in them. I also realised that my head and shoulder shot would not look as beautiful as those I had earmarked because the model is well not a model...I tried to not let it bother me but the thing is that it does.

Since being on this crazy asthma ride my body has taken a beating thanks to the endless cocktail of cortisone, adrenalin and steroids! And if that is not enough I am not circling the "40 year old block" anymore but at squarely starring it in the eye! My self image is pretty much in the toilet and I struggle daily with the way I look.  But, having said that I had committed to this project.  I had told a friend that I was going to do this because I need to rediscover my "muchness" and I really want to feel "uniquely made".

Friday was a holiday in South Africa so Donovan and I had planned on taking a drive out to where we wanted to take the photos to see if it would work.  When we woke up it was pouring with rain.  And the rain continued right through until Monday.

But, on Sunday as we were leaving church there was a break in the rain and the sun came out to play.  Donovan and I rushed home, grabbed the camera and decided to wing it in terms of location because the clouds were already gathering overhead.

We decided to stick to our front yard and make do.  Lets just say  that between the rain drops falling on my head, the wind howling,  the mud and a very polite birdie who did his business on my hand it got interesting!!

So here they are, unedited, no filter...just me!!!

Thank you beautiful Katie for forcing me out of my comfort zone!!

Guys, head on over to Katie's blog to see the other link ups and while you are there make sure you catch up on the awesome work Katie and her beloved Kevin are doing in Nepal.  God's love in action is what comes to mind when I think about it.

A CREATIVE LINK UP...

I think it is a pretty well established fact that I do not pose for photos.  I have no natural talent and quite frankly the thought of seeing a true reflection of what I look like freaks me out.

But, my sweet friend Katie from Hope Engaged wrote a beautiful post and followed it up with an encouraging email.

Being the clever and inspired women that she Katie said this in her email "I think so often we hide ourselves because we're not "perfect" but God made us so uniquely and I think we can be creative in sharing beauty with one another!"

She had me there.  I know that I don't want pictures of me wafting around because in that way I can ignore the damage years of illness and medication has had on my body.  I can ignore the layers and layers of fat and cellulite and just live in a dream world.

But, here is the thing...we are all unique and beautiful in the eyes of our Creator and God does not look down and see the fat, the wrinkles, the grey hairs or the sagging bits and pieces.  He looks at us and sees His creation, uniquely and beautifully made in His image!!

So I have decided to accept Katie's challenge.  It turned into quite a challenge as it rained (very unseasonal) all weekend which was the only time I could take photos but there was a break in the weather for I kid you not fifteen minutes on Sunday in which I forced asked my brother to take a few quick shots.

So if you are up to joining in the fun head on over to Katie's blog...

THANKFUL TUESDAY...

Day twenty seven:  I am thankful for my little corner of the blogsphere.  I love my blog and I love the friends I have made through blogging.  It is amazing how often I will be working on a post idea and suddenly there will be similar posts written by the bloggers who I read regularly. “In the Meantime” has become a source of great joy to me and it is so much more than the “diary” it started out as.

I am still visiting with my family which is why my posts are brief...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY......HONI-BUN

I can’t believe that it has been a year that I have been writing this blog.  I had no idea how it would change my life and how much it would come to mean to me.

I have learnt so much in the year that I have been part of the blogosphere, I met the most amazing women and have found a safe place to share my life.

So thank you….thank you for taking time out of your busy day to pop in and read what I have to say, thank you for your sweet comments, thank you for sharing in the ups and the downs of my life and most of all for letting me share in yours. Long may it continue.

As I and the blog have grown over the past year and with spring just around the corner, I am thinking of making some changes. The changes may include a new name for my blog but will largely be aesthetic changes.  I may put some of the features “out to pasture” and create some new ones but those are just ideas I am playing with.

To Honi-Bun a very happy first birthday!!!

ME BEING ME..........

So as I mentioned before I accepted the challenge that sweet Emily put out on her awesome blog.  This was not an easy challenge but then again I guess that is why they call it a challenge.....

It seems that over the past two weeks as I have been gathering courage and coming up with ideas for the challenge the same concept was everywhere in my life.  Friends on FaceBook asking questions about why people photoshop photos of themselves.  One friend (who happens to be a professional dancer and has a professional dancers body) commented..."how can you look at a photo of yourself which has been photoshopped to oblivion and think "wow I look good" knowing that it is not what you look like!"

Then a friend and I got into a discussion about why the challenge was so difficult for me and I must say that it was eye opening to realise just how hard I am on myself especially when it comes to my outward appearance.

This girl has some work to do........

Anyway here are the photo's I liked the best!!

So thank you Emily for the challenge and next time I will remember to enjoy it!!!

STALKERS OR VOYEURS.......

So I’ve taken two weeks off from Social media …..more accurately I was forced to take two weeks off because of work.  The first week I attended a training course for assessors.  We were in class for about 11 hours and then we had at least 5 hours homework.  I was exhausted all the time. Between the long hours of class and homework I was also waking up for a new member of the family (more about that tomorrow or maybe Wednesday….cruel I know but mystery is the spice of life)I was needless to say more on the cranky side and its probably best for me not to spill my cranky thoughts onto a worldwide format!!!!  The second week I attended a Group H R strat session and let me tell you the strategies although good were rivaled by the strange goings on in the hotel……..more mystery.

So in my forced “downtime” I have been thinking (always a dangerous pastime) about the impact of social media, more specifically FaceBook, Twitter and blogs on our lives. It seems like we are constantly on our smart phones or pc’s updating a FB status or tweeting because if you don’t people will think you have fallen off the face of the earth and you are in a social media wasteland. It seems that our lives have become dictated by our need/desire to keep every aspect of our lives “out there”. We live in “real time” and therefore have to be logged on, plugged in and online 24/7.

Blogs are different in that you write when you can and there is little to no pressure to do so on a daily basis………unless you me and feel the need to spew your thoughts and opinions regularly.  I enjoy blogging because I don’t really know who is going to read my posts.  Unlike FB and Twitter I don’t feel the need to censor my thoughts nor to put a guard at my mouth with the words I use.  I feel free to say what I want to say when I want to say it about what I want to say …….my mother, father, preacher and boss does not have my blog address but they can easily look me up of FB and Twitter. It’s sort of a safe way to rattle on and on about well anything. I am sure that although no blog is complete without followers it is more of personal, nearly private space where you can air all the dirty laundry you want to.

There seems to be such an influx of the types of blogs out there that it can be a little overwhelming.  There are blogs on fashion, cooking, jewelry , blogs which review books, celeb blogs etc etc etc.  Pretty much every topic under the sun is covered by blog somewhere in the blogasphere.

I like normal everyday blogs about people’s lives.  Pretty much blogs about life, love and everything else.  I read one or two fashion blogs and even have one or two cooking blogs that a visit on a semi regular basis but overall I like to read blogs……………..like mine. Blogs which contain personal thoughts, opinions, experiences and mundane day to day things which happen to the writers.  I know that blogs are open for reading by the public but more often than not you don’t know who they are (or in my case if they even exist….pls comment so I know someone is reading my daily drivel) but often times it feels like I am writing for myself and I like to read blogs which are written in a similar way. For me personally I don’t think about the audience, I don’t tailor my thoughts and ideas to what whoever may stumble upon my blog may want.  I write for myself……

I know that there are some bloggers who’s posts I read daily that do take the would be reader into account. Some need to because of their social standing, some need to because what they have to say may hurt those they love and some need to because there really is such a thing like TO MUCH INFORMATION!!!

The blogs I choose to follow have been selected because the author’s words, phrases, stories or situation in life appeals to me.  It may be a bit of a scandalous story behind the “Our Love Story” portion of the blog, or it may be the sigh of relief because I don’t feel like I am the only crazy person out there or more importantly that a blog reminds me that there are people who are worse off than I am.

If I find a blog I like I will spend hours upon hours reading the archives and picking out labels which appeal to me and going through photos and on some level getting to know the blogger.  This once again gets me thinking……..STALKER but no.  Thanks to the internet we have easy access to the lives of others and we (me) have become voyeurs.  I guess if I am trueful (and if not here when???) I follow blogs which allow me to pretend for a moment that I have their lives, that I am in that relationship, in that city, that I am pregnant, that I am the mother of those adorable children, that I am moving into a new home, that I am living a high society life.  That’s why I follow the blogs that I do……..does that sound creepy, well honey don’t you judge me because you know you do it to……. We are ALL stalkers.

Think about how many celebs you follow on Twitter or how many of your favorite bands you have “Liked” on FB.  See what I am talking about!!!  Now on Twitter more so than anywhere else you have easy access to celebs. Just the other day I sent Russell Crowe a tweet about the rugby world cup.  Then last week I was watching an episode of Nikita and tweeted the very yummy Shane West. When news broke of Kim Kardashian’s marriage falling apart she received thousands of #tags.  Thanks to Twitter every Tom, Dick and Harry with an opinion about her 72 day marriage had a platform not only to raise it but to have it seen by the world!!! It was at this point that I began to realize that social media has invaded our privacy making all of us voyeurs.  We have direct contact to anybody with a FB profile and a Twitter account.

I read an article recently and the author said “ We’ve become cultural voyeurs, taking pleasure in the illicit observation of someone else’s imitate acts and the internet has become the medium through which these act become exposed to a potentially unlimited number of others.  Taking out the sexual aspect of it, we’re no different from peeping toms……and the unguardedness and unawareness of the bloggers we read only add to the observers (i.e. our) thrill.”

So the question is…..”are we the master of our own blog reading experience or are we mere spectators, attempting to live vicariously though the blogs we consume?”

I know that there are moments when I stand naked and vulnerable before my blog audience (do I have such a thing) and perhaps there is a part of me that hopes that those reading will for a moment live vicariously through my pain, experiences and life because then I am not so alone in this world………

MY FAVORITE THINGS.......

I love reading blogs.   It has really become one of my favorite things and one of my favorite blogs is Vanilla Blond Read here written by the vivacious Bailey Schneider who is a presenter on a local radio station – 94.7 Highveld.

On 01 October 2011 Vanilla Blond turned one and to celebrate Bailey had a competition and the winner would win a “Bailey” hamper filled with several of her favorite things.

Guess what………………….I won the hamper.  I could not be more excited as it is the first competition I have ever won!!!!

Yesterday my “Bailey hamper” arrived.  I can’t begin to explain how special and spoilt I felt.  Not only was each item wonderful and beautiful but the love and care that went into choosing each piece  and then there was the handwritten note.  It has been so long since I have received a handwritten note that for a moment I was left speechless (yes, I know hard to believe).

My “Bailey hamper” has reminded me how much weight the little things carry.  How wonderful it is to feel special, to know someone took the time to do something unique for you.

It is a lesson I will try and not ever forget………who have you made feel special recently?

Even the box it came in was stunning!!
Packed to the brim with goodies!!

The HANDWRITTEN note
