HE MAKES MY MOM FEEL SPECIAL...

I have often shared my love for the theater on my blog because it really is "a happy place" for me. I have spent many wonderful hours being carried away to a different world by the most amazing performers.

I have in particular shared my little theater crush  on Jonathan Roxmouth whom I first saw perform in Phantom of the Opera in April last year.  I was so moved by his portrayal of this iconic character that I just had to see POTO again. Since then I have seen Jonathan perform several times and have been totally captivate by his amazing voice and indelible charm.

But what stands out for me is his interaction with my mom. I know, I know...you would hope  think that it would be his mesmerising eyes, his dashing smile or his tall, dark and handsome good looks or at the very least his sexy hands but no...for me its the way he makes my mom feel special!!

We saw Jonathan perform in the production Noel and Gertie 4 days after my dad passed away.  My mom and Jonathan shared a moment after the performance which was such a blessing to me and I share it in this post which is also the post.

A couple of weeks ago mom and I went to see Stage by Stage which was a charity performance Jonathan did at the Lemon Jack Theater in Centurion.

The setlist was amazing:

"If I loved you" from Carousel
"Me" From Disney's Beauty and the Beast
"Being Alive" from Company
"She cries" from Songs for a New World
"Something's coming"  from West Side Story
"Oh what a beautiful morning" from Oklahoma
"Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera
"Unusual Way" from Nine
"Try to Remember" from the Fantasticks
"Bring him home" from Les Miserables
"This is the Moment" from Jekyll and Hyde

Of course Jonathan singing Music of the Night had me crying big ol' tears. But then, he sang a song that broke my heart. He sang "Try to Remember" from the show The Fantasticks.  I had heard that song sung a thousand times....very off key, very loudly and very poorly by my darra.  Dad was not a theater person but he was well read and enjoyed a variety of music.  He must have heard the song at some point as it became part of his repertoire  (for the lack of a better word).  Both mom and I just melted and the tears flowed freely.  It was one of those moments that leave you breathless...that catch you completely vulnerable.

Of course that was followed up by the beautiful soul destroying "Bring him home". And it was at that point that the ugly cry took over and I just let it happen!!  When Jonathan had finished singing he looked over at mom and winked at her and through her tears she gave a little smile and my heart overflowed!

After the show mom insisted on seeing Jonathan and so we waited for about 45 minutes in line to have a moment of his time.  Once again he just reached out to her and gathered her into his arms. As I watched them chatting I realised that Jonathan makes my mom feel special in these moments.  For a brief time she is smiling and almost happy which she isn't a lot of the time. And for one small moment I can breathe because I believe that there will come a time when the three of us (my mom, brother and I) will find more moments of happiness than of sadness.

So to Jonathan, thank you.  Thank you for making my mom feel special and for taking the time to talk to her, to hug her and to let her ramble on about this and that.  I can never express how much I appreciate it.

Now that you all know how special this guy is on top of being majorly talented....Jonathan is in rehearsals for his role of Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard which will be on at Monte Casino.  You don't want to miss this performance.

Also Jonathan launched his website this week so pop in and while you are there order a copy of his soon to be released CD.

LIV'IN ON A PRAYER...

On Saturday evening I was very blessed to attend the Bon Jovi concert in Johannesburg.

Now if I was to choose a soundtrack for my life, it would have to be the songs of this amazing band.  And my longest standing crush….well that would have to be Jon Bon Jovi!!!

It was an amazing experience and one I would not have missed for the world but had been worried that I would because of my health.  But since starting on my new treatment plan I am really doing well and was so ready to go have fun on Saturday evening.

I had purchased golden circle tickets  back in November and my brother (who reluctantly went with….very reluctantly) and I had awesome standing place when the concert started. They played for 2 hours straight and then did a 45 minute encore and then a further 15 minutes….that’s THREE hours of fantastic music!!

I was going to ramble on and on but instead I found this awesome article online and thought I would share it instead…

“I MAY NOT be as handsome as Justin Bieber, I may not be able to dance as well as Justin Timberlake, but I’ve been here longer than those two combined.”
These were the words of rock star Jon Bon Jovi.
After a performance that lasted nearly three hours at FNB Stadium on Saturday, it seemed patently clear that Bon Jovi isn’t quite ready to leave the stage.

In front of a crowd of around 70 000 that had braved the wintry chill, the band Bon Jovi played with an energy that belied their advancing years.

A career spanning three decades in a cut-throat business is the preserve of legends – a status this US super group undoubtedly deserve. There was plenty of stage-craft for opening act Daniel Baron to soak up. This young musician’s electro-rock set featured plenty of eye candy (his topless drummer nearly stole the show) and lots of earnest, edgy music.

He was followed by 2010 Idols winner Elvis Blue, now a bona fide star in his own right. Blue warmed up the crowd nicely for the main event and there was a lot of appreciation for his music.

Then it was the turn of Bon Jovi, and they had their Joburg audience eating out of the palm of their hands as they tore through a selection of their greatest hits, with plenty of enthusiastic singing accompanying hits like Bed of Roses, Bad Medicine and Dead Or Alive.

At times, as one song segued into the next, it felt more like a jam session than a choreographed concert with the musicians clearly feeding off the energy of the fans.

The Because We Can tour is also about promoting their latest album and those in attendance responded well to the new material.
It was, however, the classics the crowd had come to hear and the band obliged with favourites such as Always and Living On A Prayer in a lengthy encore, and catchy cover versions of songs by The Rolling Stones and Roy Orbison.

So seamless was the music that few in attendance noticed the absence of legendary guitarist Richie Sambora – who it is rumoured had a falling out with Jon Bon Jovi on the eve of this tour.
On Saturday night, the remaining members of the band, and a few hired hands, showed why Bon Jovi have racked up figures of more than 130 million record sales.

It’s been a fairytale career so far and, at the stroke of midnight, the spell they cast seemed in little danger of being broken.”

Walking to the stadium.....it is gorgeous!!!

Jon took an South African flag from one of the audience members and tied it his guitar..

I had this whole rock chick leather and jean outfit planned but the colder weather
resulted in a more Eskimo type look...

When they sang Dead or Alive Jon asked everyone to switch on their cell phones...the effect was awesome and
as he said "I feel like I have gone to heaven"

Here are some of my fav moments from the concert....

Then a friend sent me this which is priceless...

A BLOODY VALENTINE'S DAY...

Today my country and more specifically my city woke up to tragedy.  It was breaking news….
Our Olympic and Paralympic hero Oscar Pistorius had allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

On a day set aside for love we as a people, as a nation and as supporters are in state of shock and sheer disbelief.
There is of course, as can be expected a lot of speculation as to what occurred at Oscar’s home during the early hours of this morning (around 4am).  Some of the rumors include domestic violence and a case of mistaken identity.  A valentine’s surprise gone wrong…..some (during the first reports) of the speculation revolves around Reeva arriving at Oscar’s home in the early hours of this morning to prepare a valentine surprise for him.  He hearing unknown sounds in his home suspected an intruder. He then shot the “intruder” in the arm and head…….and then instead of an intruder there was Reeva!! To some this might sound crazy but we live in a country where violence is the norm.  In fact SA has some of the world’s highest rates of violent crime and many carry weapons to defend themselves against intruders.
As you can imagine social networks have been going crazy and the media has been frantically chasing the story. This is not a day for speculation, this is not a day for the terrible terrible jokes which are already floating around Twitter and Facebook.
Today is a day of great sadness because regardless of whether speculations are confirmed as facts or allegations are proven true a young beautiful women’s life ended and a young man’s life has been changed forever.
I have never met either one of them although I have followed Oscar’s career for the past couple of years and have recently become aware of Reeva as a brand ambassador for the skincare products I use but I am shaken to my core and overwhelmed by the magnitude of it all.
It feels very surreal as I watch this tragedy play out.  I am sure that although the truth will be revealed as the investigation continues there will always be questions in the minds of both families as to what exactly happened on this bloody valentine’s day!
My thoughts and prayers go out to both families.

Just the other day..

Their first "public" appearance together..

30 DAYS OF THANKSGIVING...

Day fourteen: I am thankful for music.

I love music and if my brother is to be believed I am a bit of a music slut as I will listen to just about anything.  I can go from listening to Josh Groban to Linkin Park, from Brandon Flowers to Tree 63, from Garth Brooks to Nina Simone to Birdy to Fun to Guns and Roses to Pink to REM to Michael Bolton to Faith Hill to Whitney to Meatloaf to Led Zeplin to B52's to Live to U2 to Westlife to Enrique to Adam Lambert.  I have learnt to appreciate opera although I handle it only in small doses.  Same with rap.  The only music I don't have much appreciation for is death metal...I mean really!!!

There is little more I enjoy than coming home at night pouring a glass of wine and starting my evening by dancing out the stress of the day to Prime Circle or The Parlatones and then settling in for the evening with some Nina Simone or Ella Fitzgerald.....There is always music playing wherever I am...it soothes the heart and restores the soul.

If there is one band that I have loved for as long as I can remember it has to be Bon Jovi.  I would say that their music holds the single most childhood/teenage memories for me.  I still have some mixed tapes  CD's with just about all their hits on them.

On Monday last week Big Concerts announced that Bon Jovi would be coming to South Africa in May 2013 as part of their Because we can tour.

I just about pee'ed my pants.  I so badly wanted tickets but as I have said all my friends are in committed relationships making going out ummmmm challenging.  Now at this point let me just say that I could not find anyone to go with me to Adam Lambert (I will live the concert through all the tweets on Friday night), I could not afford Linkin Park tickets for this past Saturday night and regret not making a plan and missed out on Red Hot Chillipeppers waiting for friends to decide if they wanted to go.

There was no way I was missing Bon Jovi.  So my poor brother was badgered asked to go with me.  On Wednesday I got to work early and went online to the ticket sales.  I was at 06:00 525 in the queue.  Tickets opened at 09:00 so I kept my place in line online (ha ha) and carried on working.  At 09:00 the sales opened and they started taking ticket requests as per the sequence.  I was 19th in the queue when we had a power surge and my pc bomed out.  After swearing loudly and with gusto I got back onto the site and found myself 17246 in the queue.  With only 35% of the tickets on sale and being desperate for golden circle I resorted to the only hope I had...my MOMMY!!!

I am not ashamed to say that I begged, cried and pleaded with her to go to the ticket office and get in line for me (I had a meeting so I could not go myself) and get two tickets.  My mommy is the best cause she did it.  She got me two tickets to the golden circle for May 11th 2013!!!

I LOVE MUSIC....and my mom.  Thank you mommy!!!

Yip they are a little bit older but man they still have it!!!

I would not mind an up close and personal
encounter....

MEETING CHRISTIAN GREY...

I have decided to enter the fray about the casting of 50 Shades of Grey, the movie. First off let us spare a moment to pray that the movie is given a talented and imaginative screen writer who can turn E L James poorly written work into a master piece.  Let’s be honest as one blogger said “it is like watching a train accident.  You know it is awful and you should look away but you just can’t.”!!

I know that when each and every women (and man) read the books they imagined all the characters in the book and most of us would associate the imagine in our minds with that of an actor or actress when it comes to casting the roles.  In all honesty I was very disappointed with Robert Patterson’s Edward.  He was the complete opposite to how Edward looked in my imagination and in part I think that that is why we often leave a movie theatre and think that the movie did not measure up to the book. I am pretty sure that if you were to set up a focus group you would find that each women (or men) had a different look for our mercurial billionaire!

So since I am fearless (except for those pesky spiders) I am going to start off by looking at the casting for  the converted role of Mr Christian Grey himself.

Now before we consider the candidates (and ladies it’s a drool fest of hotties) we need to look to the book for a description of the man.  We know that Christian is 27 years old, although I guess because of his life experience I did picture him more mature while reading the book. For more details I went back to where Ana meets Christian and although it is all from her point of view it gives us a good idea:

pg. 7"Holy cow—he's so young."  He's supposed to be 27, and look younger, which is inferred several times
"So young—and attractive, very attractive. He's tall, dressed in a fine gray suit, white shirt, and black tie with unruly dark copper-colored hair and intense, bright gray eyes that regard me shrewdly."  It is kind of funny that here there is no description of Christian’s physique which makes picturing him in a suit a little difficult.  However, because of the presence he carries and because of the respect he seems to command I am pretty sure that he makes a suit look goooooooooood!!! The copper-coloured hair SERIOUSLY ! I never got that at all so right through the trilogy the Christian in my head had dark hair…not quite black but certainly very dark brown. The “unruly” part seems to indicate that his hair may be a little longer than what is normally acceptable and we know that Ana does in fact cut his hair…..or he just uses product. The eyes are important, not so much the colour although gray eyes for Christian Grey seems a little OTT.  I do however, think that Christian needs to have very prominent eyes, they need to be able to convey every nuance of his personality and they need to be cold and warm (obviously not at the same time) and even playful!
pg. 8:  "His voice is warm, possibly amused, but it's difficult to tell from his impassive expression. He looks mildly interested but above all, polite." Yes, this is his expression, exactly. Almost a look of being above it all although his voice is going to tell a different story.
pg. 9: "When I pluck up the courage to look at him, he's watching me, one hand relaxed in his lap and the other cupping his chin and trailing his long index finger across his lips. I think he's trying to suppress a smile." I think Christian has long elegant hands after all he does play the piano and he does look like a nudge to the ribs might cause him to chuckle.
pg. 10: "Why does he have such an unnerving effect on me? His overwhelming good looks maybe? The way his eyes blaze at me? The way he strokes his index finger against his lower lip? I wish he'd stop doing that." OK, so here is where the problem starts because we all know that what I consider overwhelming good looks and what you consider overwhelming good looks will in all likelihood be words apart!
pg. 11: "His eyes are alight with some wicked thought." The eyes are really going to have to be a focal point when casting.
"He smiles, revealing perfect white teeth. I stop breathing. He really is beautiful. No one should be this good-looking." God, girl, get a grip is the first thought that goes through my mind but then again the Christian in my head makes me stop breathing too…
pg. 14: "His mouth is very ... distracting." So the mouth, the eyes and the hands are important.
pg. 16"He really is very, very good-looking. It's unnerving." A perfect example for the wonderful writing…..but at least we are very sure that Christian is very good looking.
So let’s consider our candidates (oh and just as an added bonus where possible I looked for photos of the candidates in just jeans….cause we all know that that is one of the critical looks):
I am not even going to entertain some of the suggestions like Christian Bale because I think he is simply too old for the role and I don’t think he has the eyes.  Chris Pine has the eyes but I think he really has to much of a baby face to pull off a dominant like Christian. And don’t even get me started on the ridiculous suggestion that Justin Bieber plays the part….gosh he is not even a man he is like a manlet…
Ryan Gosling:  yes recent reports have indicated that he is not interested in the part but I do feel that he still deserves a mention (and a photo)…
Henry Cavill: born on 5 May 1983 making him 29 years of age. He is probably best known for his role in the Showtime series The Tudors but has recently been cast as Superman for the 2012 movie Man of Steel. He seems to be gaining a lot of support in the polls.

Matt Bomer: born 11 October 1977 which means that in a few days’ time he will be 35 years old.  Maybe a little long in the tooth but he does look a lot younger.  Matt is best known for his role in the TV series White Collar and maybe his recurring role in Chuck.  He played the role of Bryce Larkin. Matt and our next candidate are neck and neck in the polls.

Ian Somerhalder: born December 8 1978 which makes him almost 34 years old.  Fortunately, for us he can pull of 27.  Ian is of course Damon Salvator in The Vampire Diaries TV series.  Now I am not a fan of the series but I do like Ian’s portrayal of Damon. This is one of the few instances where an actor pulls of the character better than the character was written in the book. I would defiantly be happy if Ian is cast in the role of Christian Grey.  He has the eyes, he has a smouldering look and there is just a hint of the little boy inside.  Ian has an awesome body and I am certain he would be able to play the role.  I do however, worry that he does not have the presence which Christian has….

Now for a complete curve ball.
We all know I am a big fan of Alexander Skarsgard.  Alexander was born 36 years ago on 25 August and is best known for his vampire character Eric Northman in True Blood.  Yes he is blond, but he is tall and statuesque and has a presence about him.  And gosh darn it he looks freaking awesome naked!!!

Lastly I was listening to a radio station on Monday night where they were debating who should play the 50 Shades characters and the name Alex O’Loughlin was mentioned.  Now I know the 36 year old from Hawaii Five-O where he plays the starring role of Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett. He has the eyes, he has the body (no doubting that) he has the lips, the hands and he can pull of a uniform so you know he is going to look good in a suit.  There is also a playful side which he brings to his character and which I think would translate well as Christian Grey also he does the broody look very well.  Take moment……

So who do you think would make the best Christian Grey?
