TOP TEN...MOVIES

Since I have been sick for almost a week now I have spent a lot of time thinking about all kinds of stuff.

I realises that I started my Top 10 list and never finished so.....here are my top ten movies of 2012...

Breaking Dawn Part two:  This was kinda obvious!

This means War:  It was a sweet movie and I love Reese.

The Dark Knight Rises: I enjoyed this installment of Batman but I must admit that I am all Super hero'ed out!!

Rock of Ages:  I LOVED this movie!!!

The Hunger Games:  Not as good as the book but then....

Morning Glory:  The female lead reminded me so much of myself...

Young Adult:  This was a little disturbing but Charlize gives a stellar performance...befitting for a SA girl...

The best exotic marigold hotel:  I ADORED this movie.  I loved the characters and the journey they embarked on...

Underworld awakening: I do like my Vampires...

ummmmm yes there are only 9......2012 was not the greatest year for movies in my book!!

TOP TEN....TV SHOWS

Since the year is wrapping up, its time to have a look back at some of the "Top 10's" of the year.

Lets start with TV shows....

When I was growing up I loved to veg in front of the TV and I can still hear my mom saying “You look at that box any longer and you will get square eyes”! I still enjoy veggie in front of TV and now I know the square eye story is not true so I do tend on occasion to overdo the TV watching thing.

The thing is that at the moment there are some really incredible shows on and that really makes time fly.  I did not realise how much TV I watched until I started putting this list together BUT (and we all have one!!!) I feel compelled to add that I do not always watch all of it when it is on……I do record a lot of the shows and watch them over weekends and so on…..so DON’T judge me ok!!!

Here is my top ten TV shows for 2012……the order is random so not in the order of preference just in the order I thought of them.

Royal Pains: I love medical shows and this is kinda of a mix between a medical drama (like Grey’s) and Macgyver from back in the day.  The show is about two brothers Hank and Even Lawson.  Hank is a young emergency doctor who is wrongfully accused for the death of a VIP.  He and Even then move to The Hamptons where Hank becomes a rather reluctant (in the begging) doctor for hire to the rich and fabulous. And so begins his “concierge” practice. There are several back stories with each character as well as all the medical drama each week. I really enjoy this one and it has some interesting medical conditions.  Also it is sponsored by one of my clients Profmed.

Perception: I was at first not sure what I thought about this show but was willing to give it a chance because it stares Eric McCormack  as in Will from Will and Grace.  I am now a dedicated fan of the series.  I love the talented and eccentric neuropsychiatrist Dr Daniel Pierce (played wonderfully by Eric).  Daniel is a lecturer but a former student Kate Moretti enlists his help to solve some of her more complex cases at the FBI. Their cases are always very interesting and find myself “googly-ing” all kinds of neuro stuff during the show so I am kinda learning stuff.  I find it very interesting how Daniel needs his teaching assistant Lewicki to keep him centered.  Lewicki lives with him and cuts his fruit the way he likes it and also tells Daniel when he is seeing people who are not there.  Its an interesting show and often the quick scenes where Daniel is talking to his students are thought provoking.

Chicago Fire:  I have never given much thought to the work or the life lived by fire fighters.  I know that after 09/11 I had a different point of view when it came to them but what their day to day existence consisted of was not something I really thought of. This show changed that for me. The show basically Telling the lives of the firefighters, rescue squad and paramedics of Chicago Firehouse 51.  The story picks up after the death of one of the fireman and how the loyalties between the leader of Truck 81 Lt. Matthew Casey and the leader of the elite rescue squad, Lt. Kelly Severide have become fractured and divided.  Each blames the other.  But as in all good stories the firehouse pulls together as a team when another fighter has a near death experience. The paramedics are interesting and I enjoy all the different characters stories. These guys face life or death decisions every day but they are like a family and they take care of each other.

The Fixer: This show is known as Scandal in America and I am not sure why the name change.  From the lady who brought us Grey's Anatomy comes a stunning new series. It stars (and I mean stars) the formidable Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope. She and her team has dedicated her life to protecting the public image of the nation’s elite and making sure that their secrets and indiscretions are never revealed. Olivia is a former White House Communications Director and helped to get the current president elected.  However, she has now moved on and started her own crisis management firm. Although the show is only a few episodes old in South Africa I get the feeling that Olivia was hoping to start a new chapter in her life but she is finding it hard to leave the past behind.  She has assembled an awesome team which includes a womenizer who wants to marry his current girlfriend, a smooth talking litigator, a weird investigator and a hacker with a past with I think the CIA.  Then of course there is the new fresh faced lawyer Quinn who I think may develop into an interesting back story.

I adore Olivia Pope and have decided that when I grow up I want to be just like this tough as nails women who has a definite soft side.

Revenge:  This is probably one of the most talked about shows this year.  Basically it follows the life of Emily Thorne who rents a house in the Hamptons for the summer, seemingly intent on nothing more than enjoying a break in the popular resort. But it soon becomes clear that there's more to her visit. Her real name is Amanda Clarke and her father was framed for a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison for life and she has come to the Hamptons to seek revenge against the people who betrayed him and saw him sent to jail.

I like this one but do at times find all the drama a little much.

Hawaii 5.0: This must be one of the highlights of my week.  I enjoy watching the handsome Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett and his team running around Hawaii.  Basically the story is about the actions of a small special state task force which is created by the Governor to investigate serious crimes throughout the island.  The team investigates everything from terrorism to kidnapping.  The team consists of the yummy Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett, Detective Danny Williams, Chin Ho Kelly and rookie cop Kono. The task force does not follow the normal chain of command and instead reports directly to the Governor's office. The Hawaii scenery is gorgeous and the story line is interesting.

Homeland:  This was another series I had to warm up to but once I had I quite enjoy.  It is the story of a CIA officer Carrie Mathison, who after conducting an unauthorised operation is put on probation and reassigned to counter terrorism.  While on the unauthed op Carrie was warned that an American POW had been turned by al Qaeda.  Carrie becomes concerned when a US Marine Sergeant Nicolas Brody who was reported missing in action in like 2003 (I think) is rescued during a Delta Force raid on a compound terrorist Abu Nazir. Carrie comes to believe that Brody is the American prisoner of war who her asset in Iraq was talking about however, everyone else considers him a war hero. Carrie is now working to uncover if there is a plot involving Brody for another terrorist attack on American soil.

Arrow:  I like this one. The plot goes something like this.  Oliver Queen is a billionaire playboy of Starling City who spends five years stranded on an island following a shipwreck that claims the life of everyone else on board, including his father, Robert Queen, and Sara Lance, the sister of Oliver's girlfriend Laurel. Upon his return to Starling City, he is reunited with his mother, Moira, and her new husband, Walter, the former CFO of his father's company. He is also greeted by his younger sister, Thea, and his best friend, Tommy Merlyn, the son of billionaire Malcolm Merlyn; Oliver tries to reconnect with ex-girlfriend Laurel, but she blames him for the death of her sister, Sara. Oliver and Sara were having an affair at the time of the accident.
During the day, Oliver plays the billionaire playboy; at night, he becomes a green-hooded vigilante, following through with his father's dying wishes to right the wrongs of the Queen family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. Oliver's vigilante persona becomes the focus of Detective Quentin Lance, father to Laurel and Sara, who is determined to harass him, blaming Oliver for his daughter's death and his wife leaving him, though he remains unaware of his real identity. Oliver is also constantly flanked by a bodyguard, John Diggle, who has now joined Oliver in his fight for justice. We have just found out that mom Moira is also hiding some secrets, as she knows that the family yacht was actually sabotaged.
Oliver is a superhero with no super powers only learnt abilities….the stunts are pretty cool and I think Oliver may have met a love interest last week….

Suits: I enjoyed this one from the first episode. In the first episode we meet Mike Ross is a brilliant college dropout whose dream of becoming an attorney was derailed after he was expelled. With his natural intelligence and eidetic memory, he makes a living taking the LSAT for others. To make the money he needs to keep his grandmother in a private nursing home, he agrees to deliver a case of marijuana for his best friend Trevor Harvey Specter is one of New York City's top corporate lawyers and is promoted to senior partner at the Pearson Hardman law firm. He is forced by company policy to hire an associate attorney. Mike discovers that the drug delivery is a sting operation and escapes the police by accidentally sitting for an interview with Harvey. Harvey is impressed with Mike's quick wits, encyclopedic knowledge of law, and genuine desire to be an attorney; he hires Mike and pretends that Mike is a Harvard Law graduate. Only Harvey's legal secretary and confidant Donna Paulsen knows the secret.

Every week there is the threat of the secret being found out and all kinds of interesting cases to solve.

A gift Man:  I think I fell in love with Patrick Wilson and as a result I fell in love with the show.  It follows the life of Michael Holt who is a talented but self-absorbed surgeon at an upscale New York City clinic. He lives a comfortable and materialistic life due to the wealthy clients he treats, but is nevertheless discontented with his life and acts coldly to those around him. His life is thrown into disarray, however, when he is visited by the ghost of his ex-wife Anna Paul, who was recently killed in a car accident. Anna asks Michael to help keep running the free clinic she previously directed, which leads Michael to be exposed to poorer patients in need who are far different from his usual clientele. Michael's sister Christina, a single mother struggling to care for her troubled teenage son Milo believes in the supernatural and is thrilled with the idea that Anna is back in Michael's life, as she insists he was a better person when she was around.

So the ghost thing is a little freaking but it is not done in a freaky way…..if you know what I mean.  Plus the medical side of it is really interesting…the illnesses they come up with are mind blowing at times.

Big Bang Theory: I know I know this one made the list last year but it is just so freaking AWESOME I had to mention it twice.  I think this is my favorite show at the moment BAZINGA!!!

TOP 10...........

I love to read.  It really does have to be one of my favorite pastimes.  In fact I am often late for work (bad bad girl) because I started reading instead of getting ready for work.

I desperately want a Kindle for when I travel but know that when I am at home I will most definitely not be using it.  I love the feel of a book in my hand, the smell and just well….the book!!!!

So I tend to read A LOT!!!  Here is my top ten from 2011….no particular order and some were published prior to 2011 but as the disclaimer says…..

OH, the summaries of the books have for the most part been taken off the authors official websites.

Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning – I really enjoyed this series.  I love that it is set in Ireland (mainly Dublin) and I could picture the area and hear the accents in my mind as I read.  I also love the fact that the lead character is female and she kicks serious butt!!!

DarkFever - MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks... until something extraordinary happens. When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae... As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless V'lane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands...

BloodFever - In her fight to stay alive, Mac must find the Sinsar Dubh—a million year old book of deadly black magic, which holds the key to power over both the worlds of Fae and Man. Pursued by assassins, surrounded by people she knows she can’t trust, Mac finds herself torn between two dangerous and powerful men, V’lane, a lethal Fae prince and the mysterious Jericho Barrons. For millennia the shadowy realm of the Fae court has coexisted with that of humans. Now the walls between the two are coming down and Mac is the only thing that stands between them.

FaeFever - When Mac receives a page torn from her dead sister’s journal, she is stunned by Alina’s words. Mac knows her sister’s killer is near. The sidhe-seer is on the hunt: for answers, for revenge. And for an ancient book of magic so twisted and dark that it corrupts anyone who touches it. Mac’s quest takes her into the dark, riot-filled streets of Dublin with a suspicious cop on her tail. Forced into an uneasy alliance with a deadly Fae prince and the lethal Jericho Barrons, Mac is soon locked in a battle for her body, mind and soul.

DreamFever - When the walls between Man and Fae come crashing down, freeing the immortal Unseelie from their icy prison, Mac is caught in a deadly trap. Trapped and tortured by the Fae Lord Master, Mac has no memory of who or what she is: the only sidhe-seer alive that can track the Sinsar Dubh, a book of black magic that holds the key to controlling both worlds.
Clawing her way back from oblivion is only the first step Mac must take down a perilous path, from the battle filled streets of Dublin to the treacherous politics of an ancient, secret sect, through the tangled lies of men who claim to be her allies into the illusory world of the Fae themselves where nothing is as it seems—and Mac is forced to face a soul-shattering truth. Who do you trust when you can’t even trust yourself?

ShadowFever - MacKayla Lane was just a child when she and her sister, Alina were given up for adoption and banished from Ireland forever. Twenty years later, Alina is dead and Mac has returned to the country that expelled them to hunt her sister's murderer. But after discovering that she descends from a bloodline both gifted and cursed, Mac is plunged into a secret history: an ancient conflict between humans and immortals that have lived concealed among us for thousands of years. What follows is a shocking chain of events with devastating consequences, and now Mac struggles to cope with grief, while continuing her mission to acquire and control the Sinsar Dubh--a book of dark, forbidden magic scribed by the mythical Unseelie King that contains the power to create and destroy worlds. In an epic battle between humans and Fae, the hunter becomes the hunted when the Sinsar Dubh turns on Mac, and begins mowing a deadly path through those she loves. Who can she turn to? Who can she trust? Who is the woman that haunts her dreams? More importantly, who is Mac and what is the destiny she glimpses in the black and crimson designs of an ancient tarot card? From the luxury of the Lord Master's penthouse, to the sordid depths of an Unseelie nightclub, from the erotic bed of her lover, to the terrifying bed of the Unseelie King, Mac's journey will force her to face the truth of her exile, and make a choice that will either save the world...or destroy it.

I have said it before and I will say it again………..I am a BIG Nora Roberts fan and I wait with baited breath for new releases from her. I have blogged about Chasing Fire here but below is the summary of Chasing Fire in case you want to read it again:

“The number-one New York Times-bestselling author delves into the world of elite firefighters who thrive on danger and adrenaline-men and women who wouldn’t know how to live life it wasn’t on the edge.

There’s little as thrilling as firefighting at least to Rowan Tripp.  The Missoula smoke jumpers are in Rowan’s blood: her father is a legend.  She’s been fighting fires since her since her eighteenth birthday.  At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering.

Fortunately, this year’s rookie crop is one of the strongest eve and Gulliver Curry’s one of the best.  He’s also a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and winder job at a kids arcade.

Everything is thrown off balance when a dark presence lashes out against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year’s tragedy.  Rowan knows she can’t complicate things with Gull any distractions in the air or on the ground could mean the end but is she doesn’t find someone she can lean on, she may not make it through the summer…….”

I also read The Circle Trilogy which was FANTASTIC!!!  I just loved the storyline…..plus there is a really cute vampire who plays a leading role….

Morrigan’s Cross - First in the Circle Trilogy. Her name is Lilith. Existing for thousands of years, she has lured countless men to an immortal doom with her soul-stealing kiss. But now, this woman will stop at nothing until she rules this world—and those beyond it. Hoyt Mac Cionaoith is no match for the dark siren. But his powers come from the goddess Morrigan—and it is through her that he will get his chance at vengeance.

Dance of the Gods - With one vampire determined to rule the earth, the Circle of Six prepares to battle for their lives – and their hearts.

Valley of Silence - The battleground has been chosen for the final showdown between those selected by the gods and the minions of the vampire Lilith.  But there is one vampire who dares stand against her. And his love for the scholarly queen of Geall will complete the circle of six – and change the face of eternity.

I have also blogged about The Brightest Star in the Sky by Marian Keyes before.  I really enjoyed this books unique twist:

“Welcome to 66 Star Street……

In the top floor flat lives music exec Katie.  She spends her days fighting off has been rock stars and wondering how much cheesecake you’d need to eat yourself to death.

Below her, a pair of muscular Poles share with a streetwise cabbie named Lydia who has a sharp tongue, an even sharper brain but some unexpected soft spots.

On the first floor is Fionn the gardener who prefers the company of parsnips to people.  But he looks like a fairytale prince and when he’s offered his own television show, he’s suddenly thrust into the limelight.

And at the bottom of the house live Matt and Maeve, who are very much in love and who stave off despair by doing random acts of kindness.

But a mysterious visitor has just landed at 66 Star Street and big changes are on the way.  Old secrets are working their way to the surface, bringing love, tragedy and an unexpected optimism.  And life will be very different for everyone……”

I am new to the writing of Jonathan Franzen but Freedom was part of Oprah’s last season so I felt compelled to read it.  Its different to the fiction I normally read and there were places where I was challenged by the thinking but all in all a very good read:

The acclaimed new novel from the author of The Corrections. Patty and Walter Berglund were the new pioneers of old St. Paul - the gentrifiers, the hands-on parents, the avant-garde of the Whole Foods generation. Patty was the ideal sort of neighbour who could tell you where to recycle your batteries and how to get the local cops to actually do their job. She was an enviably perfect mother and the wife of Walter's dreams. Together with Walter - environmental lawyer, commuter cyclist, family man - she was doing her small part to build a better world. But now, in the new millennium, the Berglunds have become a mystery. Why has their teenage son moved in with the aggressively Republican family next door? Why has Walter taken a job working with Big Coal? What exactly is Richard Katz - outre rocker and Walter's old college friend and rival - still doing in the picture? Most of all, what has happened to poor Patty? Why has the bright star of Barrier Street become a very different kind of neighbor, an implacable Fury coming unhinged before the street's attentive eyes? In his first novel since The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen has given us an epic of contemporary love and marriage. Freedom comically and tragically captures the temptations and burdens of too much liberty: the thrills of teenage lust, the shaken compromises of middle age, the wages of suburban sprawl, the heavy weight of empire. In charting the mistakes and joys of Freedom's intensely realized characters, as they struggle to learn how to live in an ever more confusing world, Franzen has produced an indelible and deeply moving portrait of our time.

P C Cast is also a new discovery for me. She co-authors the House of Night series with her daughter and I had thought that her target audience was teenagers.  How thrilled was I when I discovered that momma writes  some adult books as well.  “This thrilling fantasy book series transports teacher Shannon Parker into the world of Partholon, a land rich in goddesses, centaurs, magic and passion”. I think the Divine Series takes you to a different world and I found myself dreaming about centaurs and rolling plains.

Divine by Mistake - The only excitement Shannon Parker expects while on summer vacation is a little shopping. But when an antique vase calls to her, she finds herself transported to Partholon, where she’s treated like a goddess. A very temperamental goddess… Somehow Shannon has stepped into another’s role as the Goddess Incarnate of Epona. And while there’s an upside – what woman doesn’t like lots of pampering? – it also comes with a ritual marriage to a centaur and threats against her new people. Oh, and everyone disliking her because they think she’s her double. Somehow Shannon needs to figure out how to get back to Oklahoma without being killed, married to a horse or losing her mind…

Divine by Choice - Shannon Parker has finally come to terms with life in the mythical world of Partholon. She loves her centaur husband, her connection to the goddess Epona and the pampering that comes with both! She’s almost forgotten her old life on Earth – especially when she discovers she’s pregnant… Then a sudden burst of power sends her back to Oklahoma. Without magic, Shannon can’t return to Partholon – and so she needs to find help. Trouble is, it might take the form of a man as tempting as her husband. And along the way she’ll discover that being divine by mistake is a lot easier than being divine by choice…

Divine by Blood - Conceived in a lie and trapped in a tree throughout her gestation, Morrigan’s birth was truly magical. After that start, she spent the next eighteen years raised as a normal girl in Oklahoma. Upon discovering the truth of her heritage, her rage and grief take on a power of their own, carrying her back to the world of Partholon. Yet, instead of being respected as the daughter of the Goddess Incarnate, Morrigan feels like a shunned outsider. In her desperation to belong to Partholon, she confronts forces she can’t fully understand or control. And soon a strange darkness draws closer…

I know that’s more than 10 books but……I had to share them all with you.  Happy reading!!!

TOP 10...........

So I’ve decided to write a little bit of a series……nothing major just kinda about the stuff that had an impact on me during the course of 2011. So I’m thinking in the lines of top ten movies, songs, books etc……

I’m going to start with a disclaimer:  Just because the item had an impact on me in 2011 does not mean that it was released or published or whatevered in 2011.  It just means that in 2011 it showed up in my life and left a mark. Unless otherwise stated, the items are  not listed in a particular order ....... merely in the order I thought of them.

So here goes:

Top ten movies for 2011…

Breaking Dawn - Predictable I know, but I do like my vampires……even if they sparkle!!!

Friends with Benefits – I loved this movie (see my little review here)

Freedom writers – I have seen this movie before but when I watched it several weeks ago it had a real impact on me. This is one of my favourite scenes and one I intend using at the next team building.  I highly recommend you get the DVD.

Fast Five – Vin…….enough said

The Adjustment Bureau – this had me thinking a lot about predestination versus free will.  I like the challenge to my thinking and the fact that it made me question my beliefs and do a little bit of soul searching.

Just go with it – Adam Sandler was brilliant in this although I am not a big fan I did find this funny.

Zookeeper – Loved this.  Gave me hope that every “pot” really does have a “lid”. I laughed so much I nearly pee'd my pants!!!

The Help – having grown up in South Africa this movie really “spoke” to me.  It opened my eyes to the fact that many of us (myself included) were raised by black women who left their own kids with others to raise.

Paranormal Activity – I had not seen this movie or heard anything about it until a friend handed me the DVD.  He told me it was real footage and sucker believed him.  It was only because of my curious nature that I found out the truth.  I googled to find out if they had ever found Katie and low and behold there Katie and MICHA were on Jay Leno.  I was very upset because I enjoyed the movie.

7  Pounds  - I have not cried so much in forever……………..…..
